iPod Killer stirbt wegen Misserfolg – Bye bye Microsoft Zune (Update)

Kennt jemand den Zune Player? Nicht? Egal es gibt ihn ab sofort eh nicht mehr.

Der Microsoft Zune Player war als iPod Killer gedacht. Nachdem Apple bereits Abermillionen seiner verschiedenen iPod Modelle verkauft hatte, wollte man bei Microsoft ebenfalls ein Stück vom Kuchen haben und entwickelte den Zune Player. Angelehnt an den iPod Classic kam der Zune ursprünglich in einem hässlichen und total uncoolen Braun daher und war zuerst auch nur in den USA erhältlich. Der Erfolg blieb aus und so hat sich Microsoft nun laut einem Bericht von Bloomberg dazu entschlossen die Produktion einzustellen.

Nur noch die Zune Software soll es weiterhin geben, als eine Art Konkurrenz zu Apple iTunes (nein ich sag jetzt nichts…)

Einmal mehr hat sich Microsoft verrechnet. Nachdem man erst nicht an den Erfolg des iPod glauben wollte, versuchte man ihn zu konkurrenzieren als es bereits zu spät war.

Microsoft hat die Meldung inzwischen kommentiert. Dave McLauchlan der Hardware Verantwortliche bei Microsoft für den Zune Player schrieb:

The Bloomberg article is NOT an official statement from Microsoft (apart from the quote above). The headline is purportedly from a “person familiar with the matter” – which of course tells you nothing.

Here’s what you should know – ALL consumer electronics products have a lifespan, and the Zune HD is 18mo old. We were completely frank about this year’s Zune hardware being the WP7 phones, and we continue to both sell and fully support the Zune HD line of products. And as I’ve promised – we continue to bring new apps and games to the platform. More of those are in the works, I promise you.

I manage business development for Zune hardware, and I still have that job. Our PR folks released a statement today that included the text: “We’ll share more information about the evolution of the Zune entertainment service and Zune hardware as future plans develop.”

 

Übersetzt heisst das soviel: Es kommen keine neuen Zune Player raus, aber die Plattform wird auf Windows Phone 7 und Windows 7 weiterleben, und Microsoft informiert bald wieder.
